Highly Mobile Deployment – miFAP Manpack

For international and technically complex missions, consistently se cure communication is crucial. The Manpack complements RUAG’s multinational interoperable radio access point (miFAP) product family and meets the clear market need for an ultra mobile commu solution.

What is the Manpack?

The miFAP product family is characterized by the Tactical Access Node (TAN). This consolidates voice and data signals, thereby enabling interoperability between previously incompatible systems. In addition to the previously introduced deployable miFAP units (carrying cases) and container solutions for semi mobile operations, the Manpack was unveiled for the first time at this year’s AFCEA trade show in Bonn, Germany. Weighing less than five kilograms, the Manpack is a highly mobile solution consisting of ex isting TAN components housed in a ruggedized case with a connected rugged laptop. Four analog and two Ethernet ports allow for the simultaneous connection of up to six radios in a shared voice and data network. The Manpack is a fully functional prototype and is being used as a minimum viable product (MVP).

Why the Manpack?

The German Bundeswehr relies on RUAG miFAP products for end to end voice and data communication in its multinational operations. This includes the mobile container system. Currently, 14 miFAP containers are being manufactured at the RUAG sites in Thun, Zwe isimmen, and Zurich Seebach and will be delivered to the German Armed Forces by the end of 2026. The Manpack was developed to meet market needs in general.

What's next?

Even the prototype generated significant interest and received overwhelmingly positive feedback at AFCEA. Most recently, it was deployed during the NATO exercise CWIX in Poland. There, the German Armed Forces, with support from RUAG, tested its use in a mu ltinational operation. Valuable insights for further development were also gathered during CWIX. The expanded miFAP product family will help our customers overcome communication barriers.
